Art Barn

Set within a sculpture garden, this private art gallery itself becomes an object of beauty. Set on the high point of the property, it overlooks not only the manicured front yard, but Middle Bay and beyond to the peaks of the Presidential range. The perceived mass of the relatively large building is reduced by setting the lower service and storage level into the landscape. The upper two levels are divided into opposing semicylindrical and wedge shapes. These strong geometric forms are then clad in natural cedar shingles at the entry side and galvanized vertical metal panels beyond. To highlight the building, the owner was encouraged to express his taste by adding bold color to select architectural elements.

The first floor contains a sculpture porch, large, medium and small galleries, a small kitchen and screen porch overlooking the harbor. Controlled amounts of light are introduced through large North facing clerestory windows. Located in the second floor loft are a private office and sitting area which overlook the landscape.

The site had other interesting view points toward permanent sculptural pieces set in the landscape. We took advantage of this by aligning views for doors and windows on axis with these pieces. The result is a surprising and interesting structure that both takes advantage of and adds to the existing landscape.
